Buena Vista senior 184-pounder Brian Broll had his bid for becoming an All-American for the first time come up short, as he dropped a pair of narrow decisions on day one of the 2013 NCAA Championships which got underway on Friday inside of the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
Broll, seeded seventh, began his day against unseeded Daniel Olsen of Wheaton College (Ill.) A takedown on the edge of the mat by Olsen proved to be the difference as he held on for the narrow 4-2 victory, which included a riding time point.
Coming back on the consolation side, Broll was going to need to win at least back-to-back matches to earn all-american status, but again came up short. He trailed 4-1 heading to the third against Patrick Sheehan of NYU and gave up an early escape to make it a 5-1 final.
Broll concludes his season at 16-4 and his career at 103-25.
