Men's Basketball Loses Heartbreaker at Simpson

Feb. 8, 2012
Indianola, Iowa

Senior Doug Bissen (Earling, Iowa/Harlan) turned in 22 points, while Wes Nordquist (Adel, Iowa/ADM) and Jeff Janssen (Fairmont, Minn./Fairmont) followed with 15 and 11 points, respectively, but it was Simpson College converting three free-throws with 1.3 seconds left in regulation to top the Beaver men’s basketball team, 76-73.

Buena Vista, which trailed by three with 1:05 left, got within one after Bissen converted 1-of-2 at the free-throw line, and after a missed three-pointer from the Storm tied things up at 73-73 when sophomore Michael Kaufmann (Harlan, Iowa/Harlan) made a layup attempt with seven seconds left.

Following a timeout from the Beavers, the Storm brought the ball down court and BVU was whistled for a foul on a three-point attempt which led to the game-winning free-throws.

Nordquist finished 6-of-9 shooting and also made 3-of-4 from the charity stripe, while Janssen made 3-of-9 shots from downtown.  Bissen and Nordquist also led the Beavers on the glass by hauling in six rebounds each.

BVU shot the ball well in the first half, making 17-of-31 attempts (54.8 percent), including 4-of-9 from long range en route to a 40-33 halftime lead.  It did, however, cool off a bit in the second half, shooting only 37 percent, but it managed to keep the game close by sinking 12-of-15 attempts from the free-throw line.

Simpson began the second half on a 26-11 run to build its largest lead of the game (59-51) with 11:00 to play.  After the Beavers cut it back to 59-57, the Storm later pushed it back to 65-59 with just under six minutes to play.

Janssen then hit a three-pointer to cap a 7-0 run and give the Beavers the lead back at 66-65 with 4:26 left.  Nordquist pushed it to three with 3:30 to go before Simpson used an 8-2 to go back in front 73-70.

Cornelius Moseby, the only player in the Iowa Conference averaging a double-double this season, turned in 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Storm (10-11, 7-6 IIAC).

Buena Vista now sits at 12-10 overall (8-5 IIAC) and will now return home to Siebens Fieldhouse on Saturday night to host the University of Dubuque at 8:00pm.
