
The Buena Vista volleyball team wrapped up play during the Hamline University Tournament on Saturday afternoon with a pair of tough defeats, falling to UW-Stout to begin its day, 3-1, before falling to the host school in three sets.
Against UW-Stout, sophomore Kirsten Van Zuiden (Carroll, Iowa/Carroll) tallied a team-high 14 kills and a .308 hitting percentage, while also posting 14 digs. Junior Chelsea Clayton (Early, Iowa/Schaller-Crestland) was right behind with 12 kills, as freshman Abby Hinrichs (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny) added nine. Sophomore Courtney Van Haaften (Alta, Iowa/Alta) dished out 31 more assists, to go along with two ace serves and seven digs, as Chelsea Gubbels (Carroll, Iowa/Kuemper) and Bailey Schafbuch (Slater, Iowa/Ballard) added 21 and 11 digs, respectively.
The Beavers came out and took the opening set 25-14 before falling in three straight, 25-17, 25-19 and 26-24.
BVU looked to bounce back against Hamline (7-0) to wrap up the weekend, but came up short, falling 25-15, 25-11, 25-16.
Van Zuiden finished the match with seven kills with Clayton right behind with six. Van Haaften dished out 14 assists with sophomore Jordan Henningsen (Alta, Iowa/Alta) recording 12 digs.
Clayton was recognized for her play over the two days by being named to the All-Tournament Team. She finished the tournament with 31 kills.
Buena Vista (1-8) will now get set for its home and Iowa Conference opener on Wednesday night, September 12, when it plays host to Simpson College. That match is scheduled to get underway at 7:30pm.
