Baseball Splits DH against Cornell on Saturday

Mar. 24, 2012
Mt. Vernon, Iowa

Senior southpaw Michael Dirkx through a complete-game, two-hit shutout, while junior Ryan Scheetz homered and doubled for the Buena Vista baseball team en route to a 9-0 victory in the opener of Saturday’s Iowa Conference doubleheader against Cornell College.  The Beavers, who were looking to win the three-game series with a win in game two, came up just short, as the Rams scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning and hung on for the 2-1 victory.

The Beavers opened a 3-0 lead in the opener with three runs in the third.  Eric Croghan plated the first run when he scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded before sophomore Joe Paletta drove in two with a single to left.

Yossi pushed the margin to 4-0 with an RBI double in the fourth, while Croghan added a sacrifice fly for a five-run lead.

After Paletta reached on an error with two outs in the fifth, Scheetz made the Rams pay when he doubled home Paletta for a 6-0 cushion.  Another defensive miscue later in the inning scored Scheetz for the game’s seventh run.

An infield hit by sophomore Dylan Colo in the sixth made it 8-0 before Scheetz’s second home run of the year made it 9-0 in the seventh.

Scheetz and senior Brock Yossi each posted two hits in the contest for BVU, which tallied nine in the game.

Dirkx, who improves to 2-0 on the year, allowed just two hits in the contest, while striking out six and walking only one.

Cornell won the battle of the pitcher’s duel in the finale, getting an RBI double and an RBI ground out in the fourth inning for a 2-0 lead.  BVU would get on the board in the fifth when Yossi tripled with one out, and then scoring on Neil Eddie’s sacrifice fly.

BVU then threatened in the sixth with runners on first and second and only one out, but the Rams got a strikeout and a fly out to end the frame.

Yossi had the only extra base hit for BVU in the contest, as the team finished with six hits overall.  Freshman Dillon Plath chimed in with two of those base nocks.

Junior Reggie Kock (1-3) went the distance in a losing cause, allowing two runs on just five hits, while walking two and striking out seven.

Buena Vista is now 8-8 on the year (1-2 IIAC) and will get set to play its home opener on Tuesday afternoon with a nine-inning non-conference contest against Bethany Lutheran beginning at 3:00pm.  It will then host defending Iowa Conference champion, Coe College, in a three-game weekend series beginning with next Friday’s nine-inning game at 6:00pm.
