Sophomore Sam Richards (Glenwood, Iowa/Glenwood) broke a scoreless game late in regulation with her first goal of the year and that proved to be all that the Buena Vista women’s soccer team needed on Saturday afternoon as it got past Illinois College, 1-0. The game was the first away from home for the Beavers this season.
It was a defensive battle for most of the game with team’s combining for only 19 total shots. The one that counted most, though, was when junior Shelby Ripperger (Lee’s Summitt, Mo./Lee’s Summitt North) dished a pass to Richards for the game’s first goal with nearly 18 minutes left to play in regulation. It was Richard’s only shot in the contest and Ripperger’s ninth career assist.
As a team, the Beavers out-shot the Lady Blues 5-1 in the first half and 13-6 for the game.
Senior Kellyn Arnold (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) led all players with five total shots, including four on-goal. Eight of the team’s 13 shots were on-goal.
BVU, which has now posted shutouts in three of its first four contests this season, continues its best start in school history with the win.
Freshman Jaclyn Pfeifer (Kansas City, Mo./Oak Park) recorded her third win of the year, while chalking up three saves.
The Beavers (3-0-1) will again face a Midwest Conference opponent on Sunday afternoon, September 9, when they play host to Grinnell College (0-2-1) inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium. Game time between the two teams is scheduled for 3:00pm.
