The Buena Vista baseball team was going after a season-sweep of league-leading Central College (29-9, 19-5 IIAC) on Wednesday afternoon, but it was the Dutch scoring a pair of eighth-inning runs to hold on and edge the Beavers, 3-1. BVU had taken both games of the doubleheader last week in Storm Lake.
The Dutch, who had been held to only two hits through the first seven innings, got two hits, and benefited from a BVU error in the eighth to break a 1-1 tie. They loaded the bases with no outs and got a single up the middle to drive in a pair of runs. BVU did, however, limit the damage, by then getting a strikeout and a pair of ground outs to end the frame.
Central scored an unearned run in the fourth to take a 1-0 before BVU answered back with an unearned run in the fifth. The team, however, did leave the bases loaded in both that inning and the sixth.
Junior Neil Eddie (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) went 1-for-3 at the plate and scored the lone run, while Nick Schlecht (Omaha, Neb./Skutt), Brock Yossi (Dallas Center, Iowa/Dallas Center-Grimes) and Dillon Plath (Omaha, Neb./Burke) also added one hit each.
Freshman Jesse Munsterman (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) made his first career start on the mound for BVU and pitched the first 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two. Junior Griffin Hatten (Bancroft, Iowa/North Sentral Kossuth) came on in relief after the Dutch put a pair of runners on with one out, and got a double play to end the threat.
Hatten went on to pitch 4.2 innings, and was charged with all three runs (one earned) on just four hits, while striking out five. Brennan Holm came on after the bases were loaded in the eighth.
Buena Vista is now 19-16 overall (11-10 IIAC) and will conclude the conference portion of its regular season this weekend with a three-game road series at Wartburg College, beginning with Friday’s nine-inning contest which starts at 6:00pm.
