The Buena Vista women’s basketball team couldn’t overcome a relatively cold shooting night from the field on Sunday night, shooting just 32 percent overall, as the Beavers saw their six-game winning streak come to an end with an 81-59 loss at Cal Lutheran (8-2).
Sophomore Becca Pennington (Mt. Ayr, Iowa/Mt. Ayr) made 3-of-4 shots from downtown and finished with a team-high 13 points off the bench. Junior Susan Kies (Fonda, Iowa/Newell-Fonda) also made a trio of long-range makes and followed with 12 points, while fellow junior Malarie Gilley (Grand Junction, Iowa/East Greene) recorded her third double-double of the year with 10 points and 10 boards. Senior Tara Lehner (Le Mars, Iowa/Le Mars) chipped in with seven points and added a game-high 12 rebounds.
Cal Lutheran made six of its first eight shot attempts and jumped out to a 15-4 lead five minutes in. BVU got back within seven before another run by the Regals made it a 23-8 contest midway through the first half.
BVU trailed by as much as 21 in the opening half before getting back within 12 at 40-28 on a three-pointer from Kies with a minute to play. Cal Lutheran responded with a bucket of its own and took a 42-28 lead into the break.
BVU tried to hang around in the second half, but the Regals went on a key 10-0 run midway through the period to open up a 25-point lead and maintained at least the 20-point advantage the remainder of the way.
The Beavers made 10-of-28 attempts from downtown in the contest, but made just 5-of-14 from the charity stripe.
Starla Wright turned in a game-high 26 points, on 12-of-17 shooting to help lead the Regals.
Buena Vista is now 7-4 on the year and is off until it opens Iowa Conference play at home against 15th-ranked Simpson College (9-0) on January 5, 2013. Tip-off for that match-up is scheduled for 2:00pm.
