The Buena Vista baseball team fell twice to Simpson College to close out their three-game weekend series on Saturday afternoon, falling by scores of 8-3 and 10-2.
BVU held a 3-2 lead in the opener before the Storm got a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie things up, followed by four more runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth.
Freshman Dillon Plath put the Beavers on the board first with an RBI double to left center, scoring Brock Yossi who had led off the inning with a single before stealing his 11th base of the year. Joe Paletta’s bunt single then scored Nick Schlecht from third in third for a 2-0 advantage.
Simpson tied the game in the bottom half before Schlecht put BVU back on top with his RBI single through the left side in the fourth. The Storm, however, then got the run back in the bottom half before adding four runs on three hits in the fifth.
Freshman Jesse Munsterman tallied two of BVU’s seven hits in the contest, as Plath’s double was the team’s only extra-base hit.
Senior Michael Dirkx (3-1) suffered his first loss of the year, going 4.1 innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on five hits. Tyler Lefeber and Scott Harris each faced one batter in relief before Brennan Holm worked the final 1.2 innings, allowing one run on one hit, while striking out two.
Schlecht scored on a wild pitch in the first inning of game two, but the lead was short-lived as Simpson responded with two runs in the bottom half.
Three more runs in the second extended the Simpson lead to 5-1, before the Storm broke things wide open with five more runs in the sixth. Weston Foxx drove in the game’s final run when he doubled home a run in the seventh.
Plath went 2-for-3, including a double, to go along with a run scored, as the Beavers were held to only six hits.
Jon Ringblom suffered the loss on the hill for BVU, as he was charged with five runs on four hits over two innings. Cam Beatty worked the next three and allowed four runs on six hits.
Buena Vista is now 15-14 overall (7-8 IIAC) and is back home on Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader against league-leading Central College beginning at 3:30pm.
