The Buena Vista baseball team got two runs in the top of the 10th inning against North Central College (Ill.) on Friday evening to complete a doubleheader split with a 6-4 victory. The Beavers fell to UW-Platteville in the opener, 8-5.
North Central grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first before the Beavers took their first lead of the contest when they plated three runs in the fourth. North Central, however, responded with three runs of its own in the fifth before Joe Paletta drove home the game-tying run with two outs in the ninth.
North Central got the first two outs of the inning before junior Ryan Scheetz drew a walk. Jake Daniels then came on to pinch run and would advance to second and then to third on consecutive wild pitches. Paletta then drove him home on a single to shortstop.
Junior Neil Eddie, who finished with two hits and an RBI in the game, led off the 10th with a single. Freshman Ian Grigsby came on to pinch run for him and would move up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Schlecht. After a strikeout, senior Brock Yossi doubled and sophomore Dylan Colo singled to give BVU the lead and the win.
Yossi finished with two hits and two runs scored, while Colo also had two base hits and drove in three. Paletta and Weston Foxx also tallied two hits each, as the Beavers posted 12 overall.
Tyler Lefeber came on in relief and pitched the final two innings to pick up his first win of the year. He allowed just two hits and struck out four. Senior Michael Dirkx got the start and went five innings, allowing four runs on four hits, to go along with six strikeouts. Brennan Holm then pitched three scoreless innings and struck out three.
Against the Pioneers in the opener, Yossi added three more hits, as Schlecht added two more, while also driving in two.
The two teams traded runs in the first inning before BVU took its first lead with a run in the second. UW-P then came right back in the third to reclaim the lead with two runs before pushing the margin to 6-3 with two more runs in the fifth. The Beavers then got one run back in the sixth before the Pioneers plated two more insurance runs in the seventh en route to the 8-5 win.
Junior Reggie Kock got the start and threw 6.1 innings, allowing eight runs (six earned) on eight hits, while striking out four. Grigsby came on in relief to close things out, allowing just one hit, while striking out five.
Buena Vista is now 3-5 overall and will play each team one more time on Saturday, beginning with a 10:00am contest against North Central.
