
Simpson College built a big lead early in the opening set and never looked back, as it handed the Beaver volleyball team a 3-0 loss to open Iowa Conference play on Wednesday night inside of Siebens Fieldhouse (25-15, 25-20, 25-15).
The Beavers finished the match with just 18 total kills and a 0.58 hitting percentage. Sophomore Kirsten Van Zuiden (Carroll, Iowa/Carroll) led the charge at the net with seven kills, as junior Chelsea Clayton (Early, Iowa/Schaller-Crestland) followed with four. Sophomore Courtney Van Haaften (Alta, Iowa/Alta) dished out 18 assists and also had a pair of ace serves.
Defensively, junior Chelsea Gubbels (Carroll, Iowa/Kuemper Catholic) chalked up a team-high 11 digs, while Van Zuiden added five.
The Storm (2-7, 1-0 IIAC) tallied 32 kills, including 12 in the opening set, while finishing the night with a .221 attack percentage. MacKenzie McGraw led all players with 10 kills.
Buena Vista is now 1-9 on the year (0-1 IIAC) and will be back in action on Friday night, when the team continues its home schedule with a 7:00pm non-conference, varsity only match against the College of St. Mary.
