The Buena Vista indoor track and field teams kicked-off their competition schedule on Friday night in solid fashion by combining to win five combined events during the Wartburg College Relays.
On the women’s side, sophomore Amber Reidy, last year’s Iowa Conference champion in the pole vault, claimed the title with a mark of 3.05 meters. The Beavers’ sprint medley relay team claimed the title by nearly five seconds over Wartburg.
The 4x200 meter relay team of Rachel Burnette, Laura Eberly, Abby Hesnard, and Maggie Marker finished second, only four seconds behind the Knights. BVU’s time of 1:50.86 was only four seconds of tying the school record set back in 2002.
Molly Hutchins took fifth in the shot put at 11.05 meters with Bridgett Hasche and Erin Laursen placing fifth and sixth, respectively, in the weight throw.
Doug Bohaty placed ninth in the 60 meter dash in 7.62 seconds, just two-tenths out of a top-five finish and a half second behind the champion. He then took sixth in the 60 meter hurdles in 8.96 seconds, just three-tenths out of fourth.
The 4x100 meter relay team placed third in 19:26.55, while the 4x200 meter team of Christian Cottingham, Stefan Petersen, Seth Woodson and Ryan Eberly took the title in 1:32.93, which was faster than any other indoor time of the team last season and only a little more than three seconds off the school record set in 2009.
The 4x400 meter relay team was also victorious in a time of 3:30.70.
Petersen would also take the title in the long jump with a leap of 6.45 meters, which was better than all but one of his final marks of last season. DJ Smith was fourth in 5.45 meters.
The two teams will return to action next week when members of the team will take part in the ISU Open on Friday, January 20 and Saturday, January 21, while others will also compete at the Wayne State Open on Saturday.
