Baseball Tabbed by IIAC Coaches to Win 2012 League Title

Mar. 6, 2012
Storm Lake, Iowa

On the strength of receiving five first-place votes and tallying 69 points, the Buena Vista baseball team has been tabbed by the league coaches to win its second Iowa Conference baseball title in three years this spring.

The Beavers, the reigning Central Regional Tournament Champions, who then went on to advance into the semifinals of the College World Series, finished two points in front of Coe College, last year’s regular season and conference tournament champions.  BVU won both titles back in 2010.

The team, which set a school record for wins in a season (34-18) a year ago and finished second in the league standings (16-8), has three All-IIAC performers back from last year’s team.

Aside from the Beavers and the Kohawks, who received three first-place votes, Central College and Wartburg College were picked to tie for third, as the Dutch also received the final first-place vote.

“I am looking forward to seeing how this team develops over the course of the season,” stated BVU head coach Steve Eddie. “We have a tough non-conference schedule which will help our younger position players get ready for conference play. We will need to rely on our experienced pitching staff to help us get through the early part of our season.”

Buena Vista, which was ranked 16th by D3baseball.com in its preseason poll, is currently 2-4 overall, including a win last time out over 13th-ranked St. Scholastica.

The Beavers will begin IIAC play at home against Cornell College with a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday, March 23 at 6:00pm.  Following that single nine-inning contest, the two teams will play two seven-inning games on March 24, starting at 1:00pm.
