BVU Remembers Dr. John Madsen

Dr. John Madsen, associate professor emeritus of business and corporate communication, passed away suddenly at his home in Rock Island, Ill. Dr. Madsen was a Wythe Laureate and one of the most respected faculty members during his tenure at Buena Vista University. He taught in the areas of Speech Communication, Journalism, and Business during his career at BVU.  

Dr. Madsen was instrumental in the development of the Mass Communications program (now Digital Media), the Corporate Communication program, and was an important leader in the early years of the Harold Walter Siebens School of Business.  He served on numerous university committees during his career and was a mentor to hundreds of students. Upon his retirement from BVU, Dr. Madsen taught for many years at St. Ambrose University in Davenport.  

Memorial Information

Cremation is by Kutis Funeral Home, St. Louis, with final disposition of remains to be determined. A Celebration of John's Life will be held on Sat., July 12 at Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport, Iowa beginning at 11 a.m. Guests are asked to share their memories of John and his place in their lives. Guests who are unable to attend in person, but would like to share a memory, please e-mail Sandra at and your contribution will be read at the Celebration. Memorials may be made to the John Madsen Memorial Fund at Buena Vista University or the Study Abroad Fund at St. Ambrose University.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Dr. Sandra Madsen, who also taught at Buena Vista University; their daughter Kaaren and their son Mike.
