Dr. Shin'ichi Tamura, President of Hokusei Gakuen University is fourth from left in the first row, and Dr. Peter Steinfeld is at right in the front row.
Dr. Peter Steinfeld, associate dean of faculty, represented Buena Vista University at the 50th anniversary celebration of the founding of Hokusei Gakuen University in Sapporo, Japan, earlier this month.
BVU has participated in a student exchange program with Hokusei Gakuen since 1981. In the program, BVU students have an opportunity to spend a semester studying the Japanese language and culture, as well as Japanese business practices. Hokusei students also have the opportunity to study at BVU. Since the exchange program was established, 64 students from BVU have participated and 96 Hokusei students have studied at BVU.
“I was most delighted and honored to share in the 50th anniversary celebration in Sapporo. The gracious hospitality and warm welcome were remarkable,” says Steinfeld. “Most impressive was the international representation at this celebration. There were Hokusei partners from around the world, including the United States, Canada, Switzerland, Spain, Korea, China and Taiwan. All renewed their commitment to building their student exchange programs with Hokusei, and offered to begin student exchanges with each other. There is also a strong desire on the part of Hokusei to build faculty exchanges.”
Steinfeld says Dr. Shin’ichi Tamura, president of Hokusei Gakuen expressed appreciation for the Dobashi Memorial Stipend, which was recently established in the name of the late Dr. Nobuo Dobashi, former president of the university and chair and professor emeritus of its School of Education. The stipend will be used to help subsidize exchange students between Hokusei and BVU.
Activities for Steinfeld and the other guests included a tour of Sapporo and sites that include the 1972 Winter Olympics ski jump stadium, the Winter Sports Museum, and the Hokkaido Shrine.
