Coaching Authorization

Buena Vista University Coaching Authorization Option

Coaching Authorization can be obtained by successfully completing the four required courses. Once this is completed, a background check is also required. The background check forms must be submitted with the Application for Coaching which includes a waiver, fingerprint card and instructions, and instruction for criminal history record check procedures. These forms can be obtained by contacting the Board of Educational Examiners at 515.281.3483. After successful completion of each of the required courses background check, all the forms (application for authorization, transcripts, all background check forms) and the required fees should be sent to the Board of Educational Examiners as a complete package.

BVU offers the following courses which meet the requirements set by the Board of Educational Examiners:

Physiology of Sport

This course will focus on the basic exercise physiology and biomechanical concepts necessary to understand strengthening, conditioning, and performance.

Care and Prevention of Injuries

This program will focus on the duties and responsibilities in protecting the overall health and wellbeing of the athlete. This program will include basic information on injury prevention as well as fundamental care to provide in case of an injury.

Human Growth and Development

This course will focus on the basic concepts of human growth and development. Specifically, this course will focus on students aged 10 through 18 who would participate in school sponsored athletics.

Techniques, Theory, and Ethics of Coaching

 This course will focus on the basic concepts of coaching including the appropriate theories, techniques, and ethics which must be taken into consideration. This course will pay special attention to strategies which are relevant for student athletes ages 10 to 18.

These courses will be offered approximately three times per year. All courses are scheduled to go 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students are encouraged to bring their own lunch. Check-in will be in the foyer of  Siebens Fieldhouse on the BVU campus. The next dates the courses will be offered are as follows:

March 17, 2012 Care and Prevention of Injuries
March 18, 2012  Techniques, Theory, and Ethics of Coaching
March 24, 2012  Human Growth and Development
March 25, 2012  Physiology of Sport

The cost of each course will be $100 payable at the time of registration. Also, there will be a $20 lab fee for Care and Prevention of Injuries. Although walk-in registration will be accepted, the courses are limited to the first 30 participants so pre-registration is recommended. Download the registration form.
