In February, students & faculty attended the Iowa College Media Association convention in Des Moines, an annual opportunity for media students. There, they attended sessions and workships, networked with media professionals, and (drumroll, please) brought home tons of awards for their work! Read more...
That's Grace, capturing photos, video & audio with one of the program's new DSLR cameras. Telling stories is what our major is all about. We give students open access to equipment, studios and labs so they can practice and create. In this award-winning story, Grace, with three of her fellow DIGI students, profile a student farmer at harvest time. See and hear the story!
One of our biggest brags of the year so far is the successful launch of SHOWOFF Student Media Festival, a media festival lead by current Digital Media students designed to celebrate cool media high school students out there are creating. In November, we awarded our very first prizes, had our very first SHOWOFF screening, hosted our very first workshops and had a blast. Look for SHOWOFF 2013 soon! See and hear more...
BVU's student newspaper, The Tack, was the first Iowa college newspaper to go fully online this year. That's meant lots of changes, but also new opportunities to cover breaking news, experiment with multimedia, and do cool stuff, like in-depth coverage of the 2012 presidental election. Tack editors worked throughout election night on team coverage fueled by their desire to do something new and now, plus loads of junk food (a Tack night tradition). See the coverage!
So, DIGI students learn in classes and in media organizations and during internships. As if that's not enough, we also bring in media pros to do workshops. Some are even program alums, like Matt over there, who came and talked DSLR video last fall. Workshops by public radio reporters, a documentary filmmaker, and an international journalist were also offered. See Matt's photo and video work.
Each year, the BVU radio station, KBVU, sponsors EDGEdOUT, a"battle of the bands" organized entirely by students! Senior photography student Clair Lynn used this year's show as an opporutnity to test out her photo/video storytelling skills. Check it out...
These are this year's inductees into the BV chapter of the Society for Collegiate Journalists, an academic honorary that provides great professional opportunities. Digital Media majors also get valuable experience with internships - find out about our students' internships with Meredith Corporation and two pro sports teams.
We're not sure Digital Media Prof Jerry Johnson ever sleeps. In just a week, he helped a student edit a documentary, another launch a talk show, and put the finishing touches on a TV event celebrating the 65th anniversary of the first TV/radio simulcast by NBC Studio Orchesta, a project he and senior David Ekstrom came up with during a media trip to NYC. At BVU, first-year students jump in and get involved right away. Chelsey & Zach are in their first year and already have their own weekly radio show. Workshops, student organizations, festivals & events, hands-on classes? Yeah, first-year students were part of them. Come to BVU and it could be you! See our first-years on the air.
The Digital Media program at BVU aims to create professional media storytellers and engaged citizens, so it's not surprising to see civic engagment in our classrooms. From public relations campaigns for non-profit organizations, to photography storytelling about Family Treatment Court graduates, to partnerships with local middle school students to explore social justice journalism, we understand media can matter, and our students do too!
