BVU Theatre Production: "The Long Christmas Ride Home"

Buena Vista University Theatre presents its production of The Long Christmas Ride Home by American playwright Paula Vogel. The play, which is intended for mature audiences, will be presented in the BVU Art Gallery located in Social Sciences and Art Hall. Performance dates are Feb. 8-11 at 8:00p,m.

In the play, past, present and future collide on a snowy Christmas Eve for a troubled family of five. Humorous and heart-wrenching, this beautifully written play by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of How I Learned to Drive proves that magic can be found in the simplest breaths of life. A significant element of the performance will include the use of puppets.

BVU Students may attend only 1 performance for ACES Scholarly Credit.

Seating will be limited. Mature audiences only.

President's Council Meeting

The president or a proxy from each student organization is required to attend this meeting to receive important information and share ideas to strengthen and support student clubs and organizations.

Global Sustainability and Biocultural Conservation

Six students chosen as the 2012 Global Fellows, will provide information on the Puerto Williams, Chile Omora project and how this program works on a global scale to promote a broader understanding of biocultural conservation. These six students spent three weeks traveling from the Southern tip of Chile to Santiago investigating the natural and cultural diversity of the region.

The following 2012 Global Fellows will be featured: Makensie Brown, Kayla Hartmann, Laura Page, Tesia Posekany, Stephanie Puhrmann, and Jennifer Welch

2012 Beaver Business Plan Competition

The Harold Walter Siebens School of Business will host its first business plan competition. This competition is open for students of all majors at the Storm Lake campus. A total of $4,000 cash will be awarded and two individuals will be invited to be considered for the Okoboji Entrepreneurship Institute Summer Program. Students can join the competition individually or in a team (up to 3 members). There will be two information sessions (Feb 16/ Feb 21) that provide more information about business plan guidelines, templates, samples, software, and more. If you have questions, please contact Dr. Kihwan Kim (kim@bvu.edu). Cash Prize • 1st place: $2,500 • 2nd place: $1,000 • 3rd place: $500. Additional Prize - Two individuals will be invited to be considered for the Okoboji Entrepreneurship Institute Summer Program. An individual who wishes to be considered for OEI needs to submit a separate application (1-page essay) by March 23 (Fri).

Cross Country Ski Workshop

BVU Jazz/Showchoir Auditions

Auditions for the BVU Spring Jazz/Showchoir will be Monday, Feb 6 & Tuesday, Feb 7 in Edson Hall. This year's show-NO FEAR AT ALL-will feature the BVU Vocal Jazz Ensemble singing and (some) dancing pop, rock and show songs. Many of the choir members will be featured as soloists throughout the performance. Audition materials will be available the first day of classes at BVU second term which include rhythm reading and part singing. Audition times on the two days include 12:00; 2:30 and 3:50 following choir. Jazz/Showchoir is a credit class or can be taken for no credit. All BVU students are invited to audition. Omelet Breakfast Fund Raiser AWOL

An Alternative Spring Break of Service (AWOL) Omelet Breakfast Fundraiser will be held, Sunday, Feb 5, 2012 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1507 East Lakeshore Drive. Proceeds will assist Buena Vista University students who will be traveling to Chicago, IL March 31 thru April 8 for a hands-on Urban Plunge working with a variety of people and programs design to turn lives around within the inner city. The group of 12 students, plus two advisors will be offering daily volunteer labor and service outreach thru the efforts of the First Christian Church of Chicago. Winter Escape Trip

International Student Orientation Begins

Orientation for International Students attending our Storm Lake campus begins on January 27.

Ski Mount Kato

2 Day Skiing Trip to Mankato, MN, is planned for the 26-27th of January between J-term and Spring semesters. At two hours away, plenty of snow, a tubing hill, and a “tricks park,” Mount Kato offers a great opportunity to get out and enjoy winter for those of all skill levels. Join the Outdoor Recreation Den for this trip. Cost is $}100 per person and includes two days of skiing, rentals, one night of lodging, and transportation (food is not included). Sign-up available at the Underground or by contacting Joe Pearson at pearsonj@bvu.edu. Sign-up and payment is due by Monday, January 23rd. Space is limited so sign-up early. Times and dates are flexible dependent upon participants’ availability.

Taste of Traditional and Contemporary Japan

This program will provide the BVU community the taste of traditional and contemporary Japanese culture. BVU students from the January 2012 Japanese culture course will perform Chado (Tea ceremony), Ikebana (Flower arrangement), Japanese songs and dance. Chado is the way of tea, which is a ritual green power tea practice that came to Japan from China with Zen Buddhism in the 12th century. The current form of Chado was established by Senrikyu in the 15th century, and this Japanese tradition has been practiced for over 500 years. Ikebana is another Japanese tradition that has been practiced for many years. There are several different styles in Ikebana, and a student will exhibit the Moribana traditional style. Two Japanese songs will be performed: one is a traditional style of Japanese song and the other is a contemporary Japanese popular song called "J-pop" that is used as a theme song of Japanese anime, popular among young generations in both Japan and the US. Two types of Japanese dance will be performed. One is a contmeporary style of dance called Arigorhythm that younger Japanese people perform. The other is a mix of traditional and contemporary styles of dance called Yosakoi that a certain group of people in certain cities perform at festivals. After the performance by the students, Luke Harwath, a 2008 BVU graduate, will give a presentation about his experiences in Japan. Luke will speak about his experiences in Japan including teaching English in the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program in 2009 and helping with relief efforts near the damaged Fukushima nuclear power station in the weeks following the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on March 13, 2011.

Sport in a "Global Age" - Globalization and Sporting Cultures

In an era often characterized as the 'age of globalization', both local and national sport cultures have seen continuity and change, and have both retained traditional similarity as well as encountered difference. Jacob J. Bustad's brief presentation/discussion will outline some examples of how the processes of globalization are 'at work' in different sport cultures, and provide an overview of the implications that different theories of globalization might have for both "American" and "global" sports.

There will be a Billiard and Table Tennis Tournament in the Underground offered the J-Term week of January 16-20th. The tournaments will be held in the Underground and continued all week long. Triathlon Training

BVU Indoor Triathlon will be held on Feb. 12. There will be 3 training sessions to help prepare any students interested in participating. Training Sessions will be held Sundays of J- Term at 230-4. Any student that participates in all 3 training session will gain free submission into the triathlon on Feb. 12.
