Final exams for the Spring 2012 semester take place this week on our Storm Lake campus.

BVU Concert Choir Finale Tour Concert

The BVU Concert Choir will present an indoor concert for their Senior Send-Off Finale Concert of the 2011-2012 season. The Choir will sing a varied program ranging from classical selections like the new Ubi Caritas by Ola Gjeilo; Seal's Lullaby by Eric Whitaker; a gospel selection; an African arrangement of All Creatures Of Our God and King; and the GLEE arrangement of Like a Prayer. Student conductors will be featured including Kayla Shadlow, Kylie Peterson, Jacob Pedersen, Sheldon Paramore and Sarah Chandler. The public is invited and a reception follows the concert.

Finals Dodgeball Tournament

Intramurals, Recreation and Outdoor Adventure is holding the 4th Annual Finals Dodgeball Tournament! The Dodgeball Tournament will be held on the Saturday before Finals (May 19th, 2012) in the Lamberti Recreation Center. The tournament will start at 5pm. Team registration sheets are available at the Outdoor Rec Den. Registration is free, but sign-up in advance is mandatory. Prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Limit of 16 teams; 6 players to a team. Please, turn in registration sheets to the IROAD Den.

Walk/Rally for Victims of Sexual Assault

SASW, SAVE, Amnesty International, and Timeout are teaming up to make a walk/rally happen for victims of sexual violence. We will meet at the bell at 11 am on Tuesday May 15. Anybody is welcome to participate by walking with us and holding signs. There will be a speaker to start then we will walk to the courthouse, while holding signs. This is going to be a peaceful rally and is open to any supporters. Our goal is to raise awareness, educate, and advocate for survivors and encourage all to SPEAK OUT about sexual violence. At the courthouse there will also be a speaker and someone will be selling SAVE t-shirts and buttons. After, those participating can choose to walk or drive back to campus. North Korea: The Trip of a Lifetime

In April, professors Wind Goodfriend and Tim McDaniel spent two weeks exploring the most exotic and mysterious nation on earth: North Korea. Learn about their experiences in this last bastion of Communism, where photographs, television, and the internet are not allowed unless sponsored by the government. They will cover a brief history of the nation, current political and cultural perspectives, and discuss their Spring semester travel course next year, which is your opportunity to see the creepiest place on the planet.

BVU Spring Band Concert

This concert features the talents of guest soloist Andrew Hitz. Mr. Hitz is the tubist with the Boston Brass and is a clinician for the Jupiter Instrument Company. He will be featured soloist with the band in the "Willson Suite" by Robert W. Smith. He will also perform "From the Shores of the Mighty Pacific" by Clarke. The concert band will also be featured in several works.

Kayak Workshops

There will be two Kayak Workshops at the Intramural, Recreation and Outdoor Adventure Den this Saturday the 12th at 1pm and 3pm. Come learn the basic knowledge, terms and skills involved in kayaking. This workshop is required to check kayaks out from BVU. This is a great opportunity to learn a new skill or increase your current skill level! This will be AASU's second time this academic year hosting Parents Night Out. Our last event included 7 children of faculty and staff. We watched movies, played games and danced with Buford T. Hi, I'm Carrie Sorensen, a junior social work major. I am looking for BVU students ages 18-22 interested in participating in a study who have either been a victim, bully or a "bystander" of cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is defined as using computers, or other information technology devices such as cell phones, to embarrass, harass, intimidate, threaten, or otherwise cause harm to individual targeted for such abuse. The purpose of this study is to understand the experiences that BVU college students have had with cyber bullying. Interviews will take place on the BVU campus between May 1st and May 14th. Silent T: Understanding Gender Identity as a Social Construct

This event is an original play written and directed by current BVU student Robert Elmore to satisy the Gender and Women Studies minor requirements. This play focuses on the lives of four fictional characters while providing a better understanding of gender identity, sex and orientation. Following the performance of the play there will be a brief discussion in which the audience will be allowed to provide feedback or ask questions regarding the performance.

"Food Will Win the War:" How Food Conservation Shaped American Identity during World War I

Food and politics have always been intertwined in American politics-from the mythology of the first Thanksgiving to the recent debates over a revised "food pyramid." But a close study of World War I (1914-1919) shows that Americans relied on government propaganda and attitudes about gender and childhood to reshape attitudes about community, food, and fasting. Believing "Food Will Win the War," Americans elevated food conservation to the level of a righteous crusade. But conserving food for soldiers and European allies abroad demonstrated important attitudes about the increasing power of national government and a new outspokenness of women (in the years following suffrage) at home.

The Incredibility of the Paranormal: Is Spoon-Bending and Mind-Reading Science or Trickery?

Can ordinary people develop extraordinary abilities such as moving objects with their mind and predicting the future? This talk will apply the science of psychology to examine the claims of famous psychics and proponents of ESP (extra-sensory perception). This interactive presentation will challenge your perceptions and make you wonder if what you see is really what you get.

Performing Culture: Hispanic Cuentos on Stage

As a class project, student groups have adapted hispanic folktales to the stage in short skits in order to bring the culture to life. We will present skits in Spanish with certain tools to help those who don't speak to understand the story. This will give insights into the different and similar values and beginnings that we share with our American neighbors, as well as how the students can engage other cultures in meaningful ways.

Humans vs. Zombies

Humans vs. Zombies (also called HvZ for short) is a live-action game (tag), where players begin as Humans and try to survive in a story where Zombies have begun to rise from the dead. The ultimate goal of the game is for either all Humans to be turned into Zombies, or for the humans to survive a set amount of time. Humans can defend themselves using any item that is approved by a moderator and thereby deemed safe and appropriate, but the most common equipment includes balled up socks and nerf blasters. Begins at noon Friday and ends on Sunday.

New Directions in Cancer Therapy Using Oncolytic Viruses

Dr. Kah-Whye Peng's laboratory at the Mayo Clinic has been highly successful in reprogramming the genetic makeup of measles virus and vesicular stomatitis virus to attack and kill cancerous cells. Several of Dr. Peng's discoveries are currently being tested in clinical trials. In this talk, Dr. Peng will provide some basic information about viruses and cancer and will highlight some of the research in her laboratory.

Mayo Clinc Scientist to Speak at Scholarly ACES event

Dr. Kah-Whye Peng, a Professor of Oncology in the Molecular Medicine department at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota will speak about her laboratory's research engineering viruses to infect and kill specific cancer cells. The ACES talk is from 4-5 in SC-126 and all community members are welcome to attend this Scholarly ACES event. Any students, faculty or staff who would like to visit with Dr. Peng between 2:00-2:30 on Thursday or between 10-11 on Friday should contact Brian Lenzmeier at lenzmeier@bvu.edu for the location of the open sessions.

My name is Amanda Challstrom and I am a social work student here at BVU. I am conducting a research study on students at BV with anxiety disorders to find out how students manage their anxiety and how it impacts their education. Long-Term Effects of Bullying: Research Study

I am Mallory Todd, a junior Social Work student at BVU. I am looking for students interested in participating in a study seeking to understand the “Long-Term Effects of Bullying on Buena Vista University’s Campus” for Social Work Research I Class. BVU Theatre: "Doubt, a Parable"

The Buena Vista University Theatre presents "Doubt, a Parable" by John Patrick Shanley on April 25-28 at 8 p.m. in Anderson Auditorium. In 1964 at St. Nicholas Catholic School Sister Aloysius, the principal, suspects that one of the priests may have molested a new student, a black boy who is the first person of color to enter the school. Her determination to protect the boy and elicit the truth from Father Flynn results in a clash of wills that threatens to consume them and those around them while undermining the very faith that they profess. The questions raised by the play are timely and a searing test of our assumptions about right and wrong, certainty and doubt.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens and non-BV students. Tickets may be reserved by calling 712-749-2211 and leaving a detailed message, or by going to www.bvu.edu/theatretickets and completing the online form. Due to the unique staging arrangement for this production, seating will be limited.

Alpha Chi is a National Academic Honor Society that recognizes the top 5% of the Junior Class and top 10% of the Senior Class for their achievement in the classroom. Voices of Hope: A Play Performed in One Act

This hour-long play presents the stories of nine individuals who took the personal journey from being a victim of relationship violence, to being a survivor, to an end point of being stronger, more compassionate individuals. While their experiences with violence and abuse changed them, they are not defined by it. All nine stories are true, autobiographical accounts, and they include a wide range of experiences (such as childhood abuse, dating violence, and domestic assault). The stories all end with a message of hope and resilience. The play is based on a new book, "Voices of Hope: Breaking the Silence of Relationship Violence," co-authored by Pamela Lassiter Cathey and Dr. Wind Goodfriend.

Beware of Christians

Four college students leave their routine Christian lives in the U.S. in a quest to find what it really means to be a follower of Jesus. Alex, Matt, Michael, and Will have grown up as Bible-believing Christians who did all the right things. As they've grown older, they've realized that the Jesus in the Bible doesn't look exactly like the healthy, wealthy American Jesus they've been trained to know and love. Their journey across Europe, often a comedy of errors, includes a lost passport, an encounter with an Austrian pop star, a surprise discovery of a nude beach, and a romantic postcard entanglement. More importantly, the four guys capture real, honest discussions about what it means to follow Jesus. The film will be shown followed by a question-and-answer session with some of the people involved in the project.

Voices of Hope: Breaking the Silence of Relationship Violence

Pamela Lassiter Cathey has been speaking to college students for years about her personal and professional experience in preventing relationship violence of all kinds. This lecture will discuss the national organization Ms. Cathey founded ten years ago, the Institute for the Prevention of Relationship Violence, and her vision for a future in which all relationship partners receive the love and respect they deserve. Ms. Cathey will also present a preview of her book, "Voices of Hope," co-authored by Dr. Wind Goodfriend. The book is an anthology of autobiographical stories of men and women who experienced relationship violence, and came out as stronger and more compassionate individuals.

Beavers' Annual Great Boat Float Challenge

Join us at Scout Park for the 4th Beavers' Annual Great Boat Float Challenge! Students, faculty and staff build creative boats out of cardboard and race on the lake to win prizes. Build a boat and enter the race or just come and watch the fun. This event is free and open to the public.

Buenification Day Car Wash

On Buenification Day, next Tuesday, Students of Diverse Populations(SDP) will be having a car wash in the parking lot between the Rec Center and the Science Center from 1-3pm. The car wash is open to all faculty and staff, as well as the community of Storm Lake. We will be using environmentally friendly products so no damage will be done to the environment and you get a sparkly clean car at the same time! Please bring yourself and your car out! Mini Service Projects

AmeriCorps will be hosting an event where you can make bracelets out of fair trade paper beads from Uganda. You can purchase the bracelet for $5 or just make it for fun and AmeriCorps will sell it. All proceeds will be donated to a music program in the community.
