“Faculty Member of the Year” awards in Buena Vista University’s Graduate & Professional Studies program were announced at the annual Faculty/Staff Recognition Dinner in Storm Lake on May 25. Listed by their location, the award recipients are:

Carroll: Jim Venner has taught business courses at BVU’s Carroll site since 2009. He is the founder of Ag Visions Enterprises, an agricultural consulting firm. 

Council Bluffs: Edward Ferrante has been teaching classes in management, marketing, and economics at BVU’s Council Bluffs site since 2005. He works in administration for Wells Fargo Bank in Omaha.  

Creston: Kathy Lockard began teaching education courses for BVU as an adjunct faculty member in 1998. She is a career educator and has served as a university supervisor for the past year overseeing student teaching experiences.

Denison: Ken Kahl, Jr. has been an adjunct faculty member for BVU since 2006, teaching communication and writing courses at both the Denison and Carroll sites. He manages Crawford County Abstract Company in Denison. 

Fort Dodge: Katie Deal has taught courses in psychology and sociology at BVU’s Fort Dodge site for three years. She works as a clinical psychologist.

Iowa Falls and Newton: Linda Muth has been working at BVU’s Fort Dodge site since 1987 as an education coordinator and has been an adjunct instructor at the Mason City, Iowa Falls, and Newton sites since 1993.

Lakes & Prairies: Julia Graves has taught education courses at BVU’s Estherville, Spencer, and Spirit Lake sites for eight years. She also supervises student teachers. Julia is a retired school administrator. 

Le Mars: Roy Messerole has been working for BVU’s Le Mars site for seven years as a student teacher supervisor. He was the Le Mars Community School District superintendent for 15 years before retiring.                                         

Marshalltown: Melanie Beath has taught social work and education courses at BVU’s Marshalltown site since 2010. She is the executive director of Serve our Youth, a central Iowa non-profit agency serving at-risk youth. 

Mason City: Eric Levenhagen has taught accounting courses for BVU’s Mason City site for three years. He is the managing member of ProWise Tax & Accounting in Mason City.

Ottumwa: Gary Granneman has been teaching math courses at BVU’s Ottumwa site since 1997. He also teaches math at Ottumwa High School where is he has been employed since 1976.

Online: Walter I. Zeichner has been an online instructor for BVU since 2006. He developed and taught the Psychology of Gender course online until he began teaching BVU Seminar in 2009.
