Buena Vista University will be offering two music camps for junior high and high school students this summer, according to Dr. Paula Keeler, assistant professor of music.
The BVU Show Choir Camp is being held July 27-29 for high school and junior high students. The camp emphasizes jazz and pop ensembles, solo preparation, group choreography and stage movement. Each student is assigned to one of the three show choirs at the camp. Each choir learns a full show with help from the music directors, choreographers and accompanists who assist the students in memorizing and perfecting each show. The choirs are accompanied by an experienced band ensemble. Students do not need to be in a show choir at their school to participate in camp. Students may also bring individual solos to compete for talent performances slots open on the finale show. The camp is open to students from 7th through 12th grades. Show choir directors can also attend the camp and observe the organization and teaching needed to prepare a new show choir program or change an existing program by using new styles, sounds and choreographic designs.
The BVU All-State Music Camp will be held Aug. 2-4 with a finale rehearsal open to the public on Saturday, Aug. 4 at 11 a.m. in Schaller Memorial Chapel on the BVU campus. The All-State Camp welcomes Iowa high school students interested in preparing for the Iowa All-State choral auditions to be held in October. The camp is organized to help busy students prepare for the auditions. Directors with success in preparing Iowa All-State auditioning students help guide the students through rehearsals and performance. Emphasis is placed on helping students individually get a secure start on Iowa All-State preparation.
