BVU Senior Applies Student Organization Experience to Summer Internship

While many Iowans were gearing up to participate in the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) in July, Roseanna Storbakken, a Buena Vista University student was preparing to welcome thousands of riders to Cedar Rapids, Iowa where she was interning with the Cedar Rapids Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Her internship duties included assisting the Information Committee that helped to plan RAGBRAI and provide information to RAGBRAI participants.  She spent the weeks leading up to RAGBRAI preparing information, organizing supplies and helping with strategic planning.

Roseanna, a senior management and Spanish double major from Sibley, is no stranger to event planning, managing volunteers, and distributing information.  She was the 2011 president of BVU’s Student Activities Board (SAB), a student organization that coordinates programming of entertainment on the BVU campus. SAB prepares and hosts nearly 40 campus events in an academic year.  These events have included bands, comedians, and student competitions as well as programming for traditional campus such as homecoming and family weekend.

“By participating on SAB as the president it taught me a multitude of skills that I was able to transfer to my internship at the Cedar Rapids Area Convention and Visitors Bureau,” she says. “My main task during my internship was to create an information handbook that answered many possible questions that riders and Cedar Rapidians alike might ask; that is where I had to be detail oriented. I also had to be organized and create a work schedule for our information committee and had to manage the volunteers at the campground I was stationed at for the RAGBRAI event.”

Following her internship at Cedar Rapids, Roseanna was one of four BVU students who attended the Okoboji Entrepreneurial Institute Aug. 5-10.  They joined other Iowa college students for advanced study of entrepreneurship that included an entrepreneurial simulation, seminars with successful entrepreneurs and business and community leaders, and networking and mentoring to enhance their understanding of entrepreneurship opportunities in Iowa.
