Buena Vista University students in the human performance program and their teacher, Dr. Matt Hanson, are sponsoring an indoor sprint triathlon on Sunday, Feb. 12 as one of the events planned for Storm Lake’s city-wide Extreme Winter Festival.

Participants will compete on the basis of the “distance” they complete over a designated time, says Hanson, assistant professor of exercise science and clinical coordinator of human performance, who competed in the world Ironman triathlon event in Hawaii in October.  The events will be held in the Lamberti Recreation Center and Finkbine Natatorium.

Participants will start with a swim leg followed by bicycling and running.  The bike leg will be done with stationary exercise bicycles. The event begins at 8 a.m. with contestants starting in “waves” of 12 people each. Awards will be presented to men and women who finish in the top 3 places overall and the winner in each age group.

The competition will be divided into age groups for men and women. The sprint categories and entry fees are:

Youth triathlon
:  swim for 5 minutes; bike 15 minutes and run 10 minutes ($18 entry fee)
Mini-sprint triathlon: swim 10 minutes, bike 20 minutes and run 15 minutes ($25)
Sprint triathlon:  swim 15 minutes, bike 30 minutes and run 20 minutes ($30)
Team Sprint triathlon: each member completes one or two legs of the event ($40)

“We will have 20 human performance students helping with the triathlon, as well as a few other students who are helping individuals train for the event,” says Hanson, would like to make the triathlon an annual event.  “This is an additional learning opportunity for our students.”

The event is open to everyone 10 years of age and older.  Pre-registration is preferred, but walk-ins are welcome for an additional $5 fee. More information is available at, or by contacting Hanson at or 712.749.2024.
