Buena Vista University to Present Two One-Act Plays

Buena Vista University Theatre is presenting two one-act plays, Trifles by Susan Glaspell and The Dumb Waiter by Harold Pinter. Performances of the plays will take place Feb. 12-15 at 7:30 p.m. in Anderson Auditorium on the BVU campus.

The performances are part of BVU’s New Visions Series, which gives students the opportunity to direct a main stage show and handle all of the tasks associated with the production, including casting, working with designers and running rehearsals.

Trifles will be directed by Kadie Dennison, a senior communication studies and theatre double major from Lisbon. This murder mystery is based on the real-life murder case of John Hossack that occurred south of Indianola, which Glaspell reported on while working at the Des Moines Daily News in the 1900s.

The Dumb Waiter will be directed by Hannah Anderson, a senior arts management-speech/drama major from Boone. In this comedic drama, two hit men await their next assignment by talking about various things as they pass the time. Written in 1956, the play captures the style of the time and the ironic way of the world.

“Hannah Anderson and Kadie Denison are both very experienced actors and directors,” said David Walker, assistant professor of theatre at BVU. “They have been cast in or worked on several BVU theatre productions and have participated in theatre internships. Hannah directed at the Spencer Community Theater during a summer-long internship working in children’s theater, and Kadie worked with children during a summer internship as a director and most recently worked in Chicago for a semester with the Second City comedy troupe.”

Walker adds, “The experience students receive through our New Vision Series is rare in the world of collegiate theatre. They gain real-world experience in the business of theatre, as well as how to work with all kinds of people on and off the stage. This experience, when added to a resume, helps our students stand apart from the rest when applying to graduate programs or their first post-graduation job.”

The cast members for both plays are comprised of BVU students who auditioned and were selected by the student directors, and the assistant directors and understudies were also chosen by the student directors.

The cast of Trifles includes:

  • Sheriff Peters — Zachary Mueggenberg, freshman business entrepreneurship major from Glidden
  • Mrs. Peters — Makenzie Mauntler, freshman graphic design major from Glenville, Minn.
  • Mr. Hale — Colin Hansen, freshman marketing and finance major from Winside, Neb.
  • Mrs. Hale — Nicole Boysen, sophomore English major from Danbury
  • Attorney Henderson — Matt Schulz, freshman theatre and vocal performance double major from Waverly
  • Bailey Dean, a junior vocal performance major from Des Moines, was selected as the assistant director and understudy.
